Fall 2011

Our mission, given to us by UVA Parking and Transportation and Global Sustainability, was to educate the University of Virginia community on biking around Grounds. We specifically worked with Jon Monceaux, a member of UVA’s Bike initiative. This initiative was developed for a basis of biking support around the University. As the Education Group of a multi-approach project, our main focus was on the daunting reality that most students are unaware of biking safety rules, workshops available for them, and the benefits of choosing biking as an alternative transportation tool. The Education Group of the UVA Biking Initiative maintains the goal of spreading awareness on Grounds about the benefits of biking as a sustainable transportation tool, while bridging the gap between University students who bike and the various programs/websites/events through educational media.
Our main goals of the Fall 20111 semester were 1. Flyering around Grounds 2. Tagging Bikes, 3. Implement Social Media Page, 4. Freshman Orientation Speech. Many efforts were made to properly execute and implement these goals, unfortunately due to time restraints and funding our success was found in flyering and social media. As of now flyers have been designed and printed and a facebook page has been implemented and is waiting on approval by Parking and Transportation. Due to insufficient funding tagging of bikes will be left to Parking and Transportation. Due to time restraints Freshman Orientation committee denied us a time slot to advocate our mission to incoming students.
