GLOBAL STUDIES MAJOR – ENVIRONMENTS + SUSTAINABILITY TRACK
Director: Prof. Phoebe Crisman
The relationship between human societies and the planet have created many of today’s most intractable global challenges. A key characteristic of these problems is their multidisciplinary scope and scale, encompassing not only technical issues, but also historical, social, political, ethical, environmental, economic, and aesthetic ones. Global Studies majors concentrating in Global Environments + Sustainability will address problems associated with human transformations of the earth through the triple lens of environment, equity, and economy. They will develop knowledge and skills for the study and sustainable transformation of the physical environment. The pan-university, interdisciplinary Global Studies major is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and comprised of five tracks: Global Environments + Sustainability (GSVS), Global Development Studies (GDS), Global Public Health (GPH), Global Security & Justice (GSSJ), and Global Commerce in Culture and Society (GCCS). The major is open to students in the College and students from all other UVA Schools as a double major.
See the Global Studies website for more information, application forms, and a list of approved courses updated each semester.
