Phoebe Crisman. AIA is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, where she teaches design studios and lectures on sustainability, architecture theory and urbanism. Crisman directs the pan-university program in Global Studies, the Global Environments + Sustainability major, and the Global Sustainability minor.
Crisman’s peer-reviewed publications include book chapters in Generosity and Architecture (Routledge 2023), Re-City: (im)Possible Cities (2018), Transgression: Towards an Expanded Field of Architecture (Routledge 2014), Peripheries (Routledge 2012), Agency: Working with Uncertain Architectures (Routledge 2010), The Hand and the Soul: Essays on Ethics and Aesthetics (University of Virginia Press 2009), and Architecture is a Thing of Art (Savannah College of Art Publications 2009). Her recent essays are published in The Journal of Architecture (UK), Dialectics, Arhitectura (Romania), Places Journal, Souvenir-Nostalgia: Room One Thousand, and the Journal of Architectural Education. She also co-edited Global Sustainability (Cognella 2012) and The Value of Design (ACSA 2009).
Crisman’s research and professional work, including the Learning Barge, Money Point Sustainable Revitalization Project, Urban Bridges, and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, has received over thirty design awards, including the US EPA P3 Sustainability Award, Places/EDRA Planning Award, ACSA Collaborative Practice Award, ASLA Collaborative Design Award, and the USGBC Go Green Honor Award. She has received numerous grants and awards for her research and teaching, including the AIA Education Honor Award, JAE Best Design as Scholarship Article Award, National Endowment for the Arts Artistic Excellence Grant, and the NCARB Prize for Creative Integration of Practice and Education in the Academy. She was a Fulbright Fellow in the Netherlands and Donchian Fellow in Ethics at the Institute for Practical Ethics and Public Life.
Educated at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and Carnegie Mellon University, she is a licensed architect, urbanist and principal of Crisman+Petrus Architects. She currently serves on the American Institute of Architects Viriginia Board of Directors and has served on the Boards of the University of Virginia Press and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Crisman is also Principal of UVA’s International Residential College.
